Wax Museum

Just a friendly reminder for our Wax Museum coming up on January 11th…

Please make sure to start collecting items for your student’s costume that suit their occupation. In addition, students will need to prepare a well-made poster with a detailed description and pictures of what they do in their profession they chose. Students will be researching their topic and community helper to discover more about what certain people do and how they help in our community. Students will receive a grade for these projects for participation and effort. Additionally, students will put together a short speech about what their occupation does in the community and why they are important. They may use a note card to help them remember these things or just practice at home, so they know what to say. The day of the event students will have time to set up their displays and dress up in their outfits. Buttons will be placed on the floor for other students or parents to press for your student to come to life and tell about themselves and their occupation. This means they need to practice self-control before hand, so they are only animated when the button is pushed!!

If you would like to help out the day of the event, please send me an email.  I would love the help! 

Make sure the poster board is stable and won’t fall to pieces the day of the event.  If you would like to bring it in a day before hand, you can!

Things that need to be included on the poster:

Pictures of the professional working

A list of things the professional does in his/her job

How this person helps the community

Why this person is important

What your favorite thing is about this person

Something new your discovered about this person after your research

Other optional things to add:

Pictures or homemade projects that the professional makes/creates

Why you chose this community helper

Any additional information

Things to put in the speech:

What you do in your profession

Why that profession is important to the community

Additional things you could talk about:

Why you chose this profession

What your favorite part about this profession is

Community Helpers Wax Museum

Parents,

The whole first grade is putting on a huge exhibition for parents, family members, and students in January! Our exhibition hosts a theme of Community Helpers. We will be studying various community helpers in class, and each one of your students will take on the role of transforming themselves into that character. We will be doing a “wax museum” where students will dress as their occupation and come to life when a button is pressed to tell everyone who they are and what they do in the community. Students will also need to prepare a detailed poster about their position and what they do to help everyone in the community. Due to the fact that some occupations are very popular, I have chosen to make a sign-up sheet for parents, so you and your student can decide what to be. Once a role has been taken, it is no longer available. (First come, first serve.) However, if there is a career in which your student shows interest in that is not on the list, please contact me, so we can add it. I am doing this in advance so students can begin preparing and gathering items for their occupation. This is sure to be an outstanding display, and I am so excited about it!! If you have any other further questions, please feel free to contact me. Positions are going quickly, so reserve yours today!  Click on the link below to sign up!

Update

Dear Parents,

With winter weather quickly approaching I have a few requests in regards to snow clothes. Will you please send the snow clothes in a bag that everything will fit in. Hopefully this will help with lost items and keep our coat hooks looking a little more tidy. It sounds silly, but could you also practice putting on and taking off all the snow gear with your child? This will really cut down on the amount of time it takes us to get ready for recess! I will be sending home all snow gear every Friday so that our classroom can be properly cleaned.

I also wanted to let everyone know what we will be doing to celebrate Thanksgiving in class. Every year I have done “Friendship Soup” with our fourth grade buddies. Every student will need to bring in one can of their favorite vegetable and together we will create our friendship soup. We will be making place mats and we will have a fun feast with our buddies! If you have any concerns about food allergies or anything else please let me know!

Please send your child with one can of vegetables sometime next week. Thanks so much for your support!

Message from Mrs. Mercer

Dear families,

First of all, thanks to all of you who have so generously supported our fundraiser!

We have had several requests to extend the date for Origianl Art Works. If you would still like to order something, it is not too late! The items make excellent gifts. They must be turned in to the school by this FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4th. This is the LAST DAY they can be submitted in order for us receive the products back in time for the holidays. You will still be able to order from Original Works after this Friday, but you will have to arrange for your own shipping and the prices are higher without the school discount. If you have questions please e-mail me brendamercer@wsdpc.org Thank-you!

Attention!

Hi Everyone!

I was just notified that over the weekend that a student in our class was treated for head lice. There have been several cases throughout the school in every grade so I wasn’t surprised to hear that it has reached our classroom. I am taking every precaution in our classroom and I am asking you to please check you kids regularly this week. If you find lice please treat them with the proper shampoo before sending them back to school. Thanks so much for your attention on this!

Message from Mrs. Mercer

Dear first and second grade families,

Just a reminder after our long weekend that Original Works orders

are due this Friday. We would like to get them submitted so that the

products will be returned to the school in plenty of time for the

holiday season.

Thanks, Brenda Mercer

Field Trip Canceled

Dear Parents,

I am so sad to inform you all that our field trip to Farnsworth Farms has been canceled. We called them yesterday to confirm our field trip and they let us know that because of an early frost there are no more apples and no more bees. This would mean that we would only be spending 30 min. at the farm to take the hay ride. We decided that this was just to far of a drive for such a short visit. I am so sorry to all of you who rearranged your schedules to be volunteer drivers! We will be planning an extra field trip sometime in the spring to make up for this! Thanks so much for your understanding and support!
